Description

Travel to the 1893 World’s Fair through a special conversation on The Joffrey Ballet’s 2018 production of The Nutcracker, set during the Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Event Details

Join us for a discussion about how this new production’s imagery and dance evoke the historical event of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Film clips of the production will illustrate the way the set of the ballet makes use of being situated within the Auditorium Theater, which was itself an important venue at the 1893 Fair.

Choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker runs December 1-30, 2018, at the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. In this production, magic is on the horizon for young Marie and her mother, a sculptress creating the iconic Statue of the Republic. As they prepare for their annual holiday celebration, a visit from the charming but mysterious Great Impresario sets off a Christmas Eve dream of whirlwind romance and adventure. Wheeldon’s Nutcracker boldly re-imagines this enduring classic for a new generation.
