Description

A Healthy Diet to Fight Depression

Event Details

Presented on the occasion of the 4th edition of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World. The theme of this year's Italian Cuisine Week, which will take place from November 18-24, 2019, is Food Education: The Culture of Taste. This yearly initiative was developed to promote Italian culinary traditions and food-and- wine connoisseurship as a distinctive trait of Italian identity and culture.

Professor Graziano Pinna, Department of Psychiatry, University of Illinois, Chicago will speak on how a diet of fruit, vegetables, fish and lean meat can combat depression. He will discuss a study that was conducted on youth suffering from depression, who changed their diet for only three weeks. Published in the journal "Plos One" and conducted by Heather Francis from Macquarie University in Australia, this landmark clinical study marks the first of its kind to demonstrate the effectiveness a healthy diet can have as an antidepressant.

A variety of studies demonstrate that an unhealthy diet can lead one to the risks of depression and how to the contrary, a healthy diet can lead one to less of a risk for developing this illness," stated Psychiatrist Graziano Pinna in an interview with ANSA.

The researchers worked with 76 young adults suffering from moderate to serious depression. Part of them were asked to modify their diet, reducing saturated fats and fried foods, as well as sugar, in favor of fruit, vegetables, fish, and lean meat. The others were asked to simply continue their usual diets.
