"The thing about the hero is that he does not work contrary to intent." Drawing on myths, dreams, fairytales and folktales from cultures worldwide, Joseph Campbell mapped out the hero’s journey in his 1949 text The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Event Details
The hero’s journey is an archetype for narrative which delineates a universal set of events for self-actualization according to Campbell. The Hero with a Thousand Faces is dense and difficult to penetrate for the average reader. Campbell’s language is steeped in the rhetoric of mysticism and requires a familiarity of Freud’s theorizing on the Oedipus Complex to truly understand.
In a series of four interactive lectures each covering a phase of the hero’s journey The Hero Unmasked will render Campbell’s narrative accessible to the non-specialist. Using examples from film and literature, the interactive lectures will illustrate in clear relatable language the meaning of each hero-event.
Understanding the hero’s journey has value for anyone interested in the mechanics of narrative because it provides a structure for two of the most important questions we ask daily, which are questions of narrative, namely, ‘what’s next and why?’
Participants can begin the journey with the first lecture on the Origin of Evil (June 6, 2019) for $60. Participants interested in continuing the journey can purchase the lectures on Departure (June 13th), Initiation (June 20th) and Return (June 27th) for an additional $180. Participants can commit to the entire journey and purchase all four lectures for $220. Priority will be given to participants who commit to the entire journey.
