Event Details

Tuman’s celebrates Oktoberfest with an all-day kickoff party on Saturday, September 17, and an ongoing celebration of seasonal beers and brats through Monday, October 31. The kick-off party tapping features a lineup of eight Oktoberfest beers, including award-winning German Festbiers, German-inspired Chicago-made beers, and a limited release bourbon barrel-aged Märzenbier. The classic Festbiers are served in traditional steins; pricing is $8 for a half-liter and $15 for a liter. The barrel-aged beer is served in a 13.2-ounce snifter ($8). The kick-off party is from 11 a.m.-3 a.m. September 17, and the featured beers are offered during regular business hours daily September 17-October 31.

The bar also debuts a $15 Paulina Meat Market Smoked Thuringer Brat and Oktoberfest Pork Beer Brat Dinner at the kick-off party. The brats are served with sauteed cabbage, crispy bacon, and roasted potatoes, plus a side of German mustard (available after 4 p.m. daily September 17 through October 31).

Beer information for the Oktoberfest kick-off party is listed below. As seasonal beers are limited, expect rotating Festbier selections from breweries such as Pipeworks Brewing and Midwest Coast Brewing to make the draft list starting in late September. GERMAN BEERS
Hofbräu München, Munich, Germany, Oktoberfestbier, 6.3% ABV
Full-bodied bottom-fermented Lager brewed especially for Oktoberfest since the early 1800s. Light and refreshing with a clean crisp edge and a slight bitterness.

Privatbrauerei Ayinger, Aying, Bavaria, Germany, Oktober Fest-Märzen, 5.8% ABV
This award-winning beer is brewed every March especially for the Oktoberfest season. A rich, golden color with a slightly sweet, malty nose. Medium to full body with a soft dryness from maturation.

Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, Weihenstephaner Festbier, Freising, Bavaria, Germany, 5.8% ABV
This brewery claims to be the oldest (still existing) brewery in the world. Founded in 1040, the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan was originally Weihenstephan Abbey, the home of the Benedictine monks until the dissolution of the monastery in 1803. The brewery is perched high above the city of Freising on Weihenstephan Hill. This Festbier is deep gold in color, with a balanced harmony of hop and malt aromas, and full-bodied flavor.

BARREL-AGED LIMITED-EDITION BEER
Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ultimate Oktoberfest, 10% ABV
Imperial German-Style Märzen aged for nine months in bourbon barrels. Smooth flavors of bourbon atop caramel and sweet bread with moderate bitterness. Ultimate Oktoberfest was created to help Founders celebrate its 25th anniversary in Grand Rapids.

AMERICAN BEERS
Dovetail Brewery, Chicago, Illinois, Festbier, 6.7% ABV
Märzen brewed in the early spring and matured through the summer. This double-decocted Lager is brewed for the brewery’s annual Oktoberfestiversary party. Expect fall-like flavors of light toast, bread crust, and of course, pretzel.

3 Floyds Brewing, Munster, Indiana, Munsterfest, 6.2% ABV
A Märzen-Style Festbier brewed with the finest German malted barley, aromatic Bavarian noble hops and traditional lager yeast. This rich malty lager remains true to the tradition of fest beers originally brewed to honor the marriage of Prince Ludwig in 1810.

Goose Island Brewery, Chicago, Illinois, Oktoberfest, 5.7% ABV
Brimming with notes of toasted malt and freshly baked rye bread. This light-bodied German Lager is clean and crisp with a fine noble hop character and mild earthy bitterness that is the hallmark of Hallertau Hops.

Metropolitan Brewing, Chicago, Illinois, Afterburner, 6.1% ABV
Toasty malt aromas and a dry, elegant lager finish. Notes of graham crackers and a slight toffee character. Biscuit malt provides body; balanced with a delicate sweetness. Mild aromas of noble Hallertauer Mittelfrueh hops. Finishes elegant and dry.
